Another day of group play is complete in Brazil. Here is a recap of Thursday’s action from the World Cup.
Colombia 2 – Ivory Coast 1
Colombia has never made it past group play in their nation’s history. That streak has now ended as a group of young stars has led this team to their second win in a row, cementing their place in the field of 16. This game was back and forth the entire first half, without anything happening that resulted in a score. This all changed at the 64’ mark, when James Rodriguez nailed home a header off a corner kick. Just six minutes later, substitute Juan Quintero would score again for Colombia and the game looked to be getting out of reach for Ivory Coast. Just three minutes later, Gervinho would start taking over the game and scored his first goal on a nifty drive where he beat three players outside of the keepers box and drilled a shot past David Ospina. Gervinho would keep the pressure on for Ivory Coast, but they failed to score again in the final 20 minutes of play. Diedier Drogba and Yay Touré both had their fair share of chances to score, but neither of them were able to help Ivory Coast get the win.
Colombia now sits at 28/1 odds to win the World Cup and will finish up group play against Japan. Ivory Coast still remains a favorite to advance with 100/1 odds, but they’ll need a win against Greece in the final game of group pairings when the teams meet on Tuesday.
Uruguay 2 – England 1
One of the biggest stars in the British Primer League this past season was Liverpool’s Luis Suarez. On Tuesday, Suarez continued his dominance in the game, but this time it would be for his home country as Uruguay topped England 2-1. Suarez scored two goals for his squad, at 39’ and 85’, and this was after reports that he could miss the game due to injury. Unfortunately for England, Suarez was in great form and had a spectacular performance and kept his team hopeful for advancing to the next round. 2014 FIFA Wold Cup: Thursday Results : Columbia and Uruguay Win. Wayne Rooney did have a goal in at the 75’ mark, which looked hopeful that England could get a draw. However, when Suarez scored 10 minutes later, the excitement quickly ended.
Uruguay has improved to 40/1 odds to win the World Cup, while England is at 100/1. A win for Uruguay against Italy would get them into the next round, while England needs a variety of good circumstances to go in their favor for them to remain hopeful.
Japan 0 – Greece 0
Japan and Greece aren’t doing much for their chances of moving on, as both teams played to a draw on Thursday. Both teams lost their opening games, so they both only have one point apiece. Greece has yet to score a goal in the 2014 World Cup, while Japan has only scored once. In order for Japan to advance, they’ll have to get a win against Colombia when the teams play on Tuesday. However, Ivory Coast can put those dreams away with a win of their own against Greece.
