Anthony Davis Suffers Fracture , Monty Williams’ Pelicans Bruised

While some teams in the Western Conference could handle a potential injury to one of their top players, the fracture of the hand of Anthony Davis is likely to be immensely detrimental to the New Orleans Pelicans. In Sundays win over the Knicks, Davis fractured his left hand which could result in him missing multiple weeks.

Davis has established himself as one of the top young players in the NBA in his second year in the league.

Entering play Sunday, he led the NBA with 3.9 blocks per game. He also averaged 19.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game for the Pelicans (7-8).

Davis’ player efficiency rating of 28.35 entering play Sunday was second only to Miami’s LeBron James.

The Eastern Conference certainly hasn’t been impressive this year. Only three teams are at, or above, .500 and the Pistons, at 7-10, would qualify for the eighth spot if the playoffs were to start today. However, in the West, the injury to Davis could mean the difference between the lottery and the playoffs. The West is stacked with teams like San Antonio, Oklahoma, the Clippers, and even the red hot Trailblazers.

The Pelicans are currently at 9-8 and just finished a three game winning streak on the east coast. However that’s only good enough for tenth overall in the West.

The most recent win for the Pelicans was against a Derrick Rose-less Bulls squad in a 131-128 overtime final. In that game, Ryan Anderson had 36 points, Justin Smith had 14 rebounds, while Jrue Holiday had 12 dishes.

The Pelicans are going to need complete team efforts like this during Davis’ time while rehabbing his hand. It’s uncertain as to how long he’ll be out, but the Pelicans will need to weather that storm. But during the month of December, they’ll only play one game against an Eastern Conference team, while the remaining will all be against tough, tough West Coast teams. But if they can continue to keep things floating, they will gladly welcome Davis back with the hopes of being a contender in the West.

The good news is the Pelicans head Monty Williams coach isn’t on this list
