Are the Spurs The Team To Beat In The West? Odds to win 2014 NBA Championship

Are the Spurs The Team To Beat In The West?

You’d think that sooner or later, age would catch up to the San Antonio Spurs. And yet lead by Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Kawhi Leonard and coach Gregg Popovich, the Spurs once again find themselves atop the Western Conference in the NBA and look to be one of the more well-rounded teams in the league this year.

The Spurs don’t score a lot, at 98 points per game, that ranks 18th in the league. But they win games, like they always have, with hard nose hoops and teamwork. They average 23 assists per game, which is 7th in the league, and are the third best defense, allowing just under 90 per game.

If the Spurs keep on the pace they have been on to start the season, they will win more than 50 games for the 15th straight season. If that’s not the definition of consistency, show me another team in the NBA that’s better. However, they have also been known in recent years for their ability to have great regular seasons, only to come up short in the playoffs. In two of the last seasons, the Spurs have held the top seed in the playoffs, but they were upset by eight-seeded Memphis three seasons ago and haven’t been able to get past Oklahoma in the last two.

With teams like Memphis, Oklahoma City, Houston and the Clippers all looking to stand in their way, it certainly won’t be an easy path for the Spurs. But if they keep performing like they have since Tim Duncan became a part of this team, they’ll be hard for any team to take down.
