Iowa State vs Kansas State Big 12 Top 25 Matchup

13:45 ET
535 KansasSt +9 (-110)
536 IowaSt-9 (-110)
Majority of the top-25 teams will be in action on Saturday in a filled NCAA basketball day. And while the main matchup to watch may be that between the Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines, don’t sleep on the importance of the Big 12 game between Kansas State and Iowa State.

Iowa State is off to one of the hottest starts in school history at 14-3. Granted that record looked much more strong a week ago when they were 14-0, before they hit a 3-game losing streak against Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. Nonetheless, the Cyclones still find themselves ranked at #16 in the national polls. And if you start to think that Iowa State can only win against easier, out of conference opponents, think again. The Cyclones have wins over Baylor, Iowa and Michigan, who were ranked 7, 23 and 7 respectively when the teams played. Iowa State will get a chance to stop their current three-game slide against another ranked opponent in #22 Kansas State.

Kansas State surely had a rough start to their season after losing three of their first five games. What may be worse is two of those losses came against Charlotte and the University of Northern Colorado. And with all due respect to the 49ers and Bears, Kansas State should run over teams that are in weaker conferences. Luckily for Wildcats fans, Kansas State has shrugged off the slow start and went on a 10-game winning run. They would then lose to in-state rival Kansas, before reeling off two wins against Oklahoma and West Virginia. And while the Wildcats lost their last game against Texas by a three-pointer, they come into their game against Iowa State as the 22nd ranked team in the nation and sitting in fourth place, which is two spots ahead of the Cyclones, in the Big 12.

In previous years, Kansas State may have thought to have been the one expected to dominate this game. But with the way that Iowa State has been playing, the tables have turned this year. The Cyclones are winning games with points and passing. They currently average 85 points per game, which is good enough for sixth in the nation, and 18 assists, which is only a slight second to Creighton.

Kansas State, on the other hand, has been winning games with the inside-outside combination of 6’7” forward Thomas Gipson and freshman guard, Marcus Foster. Foster leads the team with 13.7 points per game, while Gipson comes in with 12.5 and also pulls down 6.2 boards per.

Iowa State started with such a tremendous streak that they surprised many people in the NCAA world. However, that 14-0 start put a huge target on their back and they have finally been broken over the last three games. They desperately need a win to stay relevant in both the Big 12 and in the national rankings. A loss will all but surely drop them out of the top 25, while bolstering Kansas State’s resume at the same time. We are getting to a point in the season where conference matchups are becoming do-or-die games, which might just be the case on Saturday in Ames.
