Packers and Seahawks Kick Things Off On Thursday, September 4, 2014

Football is back and the season will kick off on Thursday with a showdown between the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers. It’s been two years since “The Fail Mary” play that kicked off the 2012 season, and we can hope that Thursday night’s matchup is going to be every bit as exciting.

In 2012, the Packers were one-year removed from being crowned the Super Bowl Champs. This year, the Seahawks will welcome the Pack to town as the defending champions as they hope to repeat for a second year in a row. With the way things stand now, before things even kick off on Thursday, the Seahawks find themselves tied with the Broncos for the best odds in the league to win the 2015 Super Bowl at 6/1. The Packers, who will be hoping for a more impressive showing than they had last year, are also among the top teams in the league at 11/1 odds.

The Packers were able to make the playoffs last year, though it was in one of the more unusual ways we’ve seen in recent years. After starting the season 1-2 before their bye week, the Packers would come back and win four straight. However, in a divisional game against Chicago, Aaron Rodgers would injure his left shoulder and the Pack would go on to lose three in a row, followed by a tie, and then another loss in embarrassing fashion to Detroit. During their struggles, Green Bay juggled Senica Wallace, Scott Tolzien, and eventually Matt Flynn under center.

By the time Rogers came back, the Pack needed to win their final game of the season against Chicago. When they they did, they edged out the Bears to represent the NFC North in the playoffs in the process. However, Green Bay ended their season in the Wild Card round with a 23-20 loss to the 49ers.

While Green Bay had a tumultuous year that involved plenty of ups and downs, the Seahawks experienced their best season in franchise history. Seattle would win their first four games in a row. After losing in Week 5 to Indy, they wouldn’t taste defeat again until Week 14 against San Francisco. With the top spot in the NFC under their belt, Seattle would go on to defeat New Orleans and San Francisco in the Divisional and Conference rounds of the playoffs, before knocking off the Broncos in an impressive 43-8 fashion to claim their first Super Bowl Championship.

Many will argue that Seattle has only gotten better since their championship win. Russell Wilson has more experience as he enters his third year in the league, Marshawn Lynch has a new contract, and Person Harvin is expected to be healthy to start the season. On the other side of the ball, the Boom Squad is still led by Richard Sherman and a core group of guys that had the best defense in the league last season.

While it’s hard not to get excited about the first game of the NFL season, this one is an extra tasty treat for fans. You have two NFC powerhouses that are trying to get off on the right foot to start their season, and they’ll be on in front of the entire nation to see on Thursday evening.
