Thanksgiving NFL Preview with Free NBA and NCAA Basketball Picks

While people around the United States sit back and enjoy spending time with family on Thanksgiving, we’ll also have a host of games to watch all day long in the NFL. So sit back, let the tryptophan (essencial amino acid)  set in and loosen up your belt buckle as there are three games on the slate that should be worthwhile. The Thanksgiving Day football tradition dates back to 1934.

Starting things off will be the Packers and the Lions. In what was one of the weirdest weekends ever for the NFC North two teams tied and the other two were upset by underdog squads. This weekend, the Lions will hope to take advantage of a Packers squad that is still without Aaron Rodgers in the backfield. It’s likely that Alex Flynn will get the nod to start but rookie Scott Tolzien will also be waiting for another chance as well.

Green Bay Packers
Detroit Lions

Either way, the Lions will hope to recover from an embarrassing loss against the Buccaneers. Matthew Stafford threw four interceptions in that one, allowing for the Bucs to capitalize and outlast the Lions in the final quarter of play. The Lions have had the potential to take lead of the NFC North in the last two weeks, but have lost two games in a row. The Packers will hope for another loss in this one, so they can make up ground on the top spot in the division.

In between the morning and night games on Thanksgiving is the midday matchup between the Cowboys and the Raiders. While the Raiders are coming off a heartbreaking last second loss to the Titans, the Cowboys will look to follow up their huge win over divisional rival New York.

Oakland Raiders
Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys are also now tied for first place in the NFC South, a place that many people might not have thought they’d be just a few weeks ago. But with only a few games left in the season, things are looking promising for things in Dallas, especially with the fact that the Giants started off so badly and the Redskins are destructing on their own. Sure, the Cowboys are notorious for failing when the lights are all on them, especially in a game they should win. But in this one, they’ll be a ten-point favorite to start things off.

Matt McGloin has looked promising as an individual for the Raiders, though he has a lost three of the last four games as the starter. As Terrelle Pryor continues to get healthier, there is the possibility he could come back if things don’t go well for McGloin.

A ten-point spread is a generous offering to the Cowboys, especially with how poorly they typically play on the national spotlight. However, if they could get a win on Thursday, htat could be some huge momentum for them as they look to finish off the season with a few divisional games in the coming weeks.

The Steelers and Ravens will kick off in prime time in what is expected to be a game that could have a huge impact on the AFC North. The Steelers have now won three in a row and five of their last seven, and have many people thinking that they may be able to press the Bengals for the top spot in the division. If nothing else, they can at least be in the conversation of the Wild Card spot, if they can win on Thursday night.

The Steelers won the first game that these two played with a 19-16 victory in week 7. That might be the reason that, despite the hot streak the Steelers have been on lately, the Ravens are still favored in this one to win by at least a field goal.

Pittsburgh Steelers
Baltimore Ravens

Both teams could really use a win on Thanksgiving night. Not to say that a loss will put them out of the playoff picture, but a win would even mean more when you look at how these two teams line up against one another in their respective division. Consider the fact that they both have 5-6 records, a win would mean some serious leverage when it comes to catching up to the Bengals, also considering the fact that both of these teams will play the Bengals in the final weeks of the season.

Oklahoma City -2.5 vs. San Antonio ————————————————————

The Spurs are a machine. At 13-1 they sit atop the Western Conference standings showing no signs of a hangover from last year’s devastating loss in the NBA Finals. But there are a couple of reasons why the Thunder are the play tonight in this matchup. NBA regular season games are often all about who wants/needs the game more and this game simply means more to Oklahoma City. Russell Westbrook is back and the Thunder are looking to make a statement that they are the best team in the Western conference after they’ve seemingly been the forgotten team all offseason as the Clippers and Rockets got all of the headlines and the Spurs were glorified even in defeat in the Finals. Second, the Spurs have won 11 in a row but only 2 came against teams with a winning record and 1 of those was against the 7-6 Nuggets who were 0-3 at the time. This is a major step up in competition and a road game against one of the most talented teams in the league. Play on OKC. **

Duke -9 vs. Alabama ————————————————————

Duke is Duke. They find ways to win at home. Especially when they have the refs on their side. Bad call against Vermont saved the Dukies from a huge early season upset. The Blue Devils have yet to stop anyone on the defensive side of the ball. They can score with anyone but getting key stops in games is what is costing this team to be one of the best in the country. Today, they come off that 1 pt win over Vermont and face a good Alabama team that lost it’s opening game to Oklahoma(4-1, only loss to Michigan State) and has realed off DD wins against their last three opponents. But those teams are bottom level stat padders. Expect Coach K and the Blue Devils to give their best defensive effort tonight, and come out with a DD win late in the game. Duke 81 Alabama 70.
